Frontpage does not automatically save embedded files when closing

I've been trying to add Interactive Buttons to my web page, but FP saves them
in a temp directory and does not automatically prompt to save the (embedded)
files when closing. I can't right click on them to change properties, as you
simply revert to the main button options window, which does not have the base
address of the files. Someone please help!

Do you have a site open (File Menu | Open Site) before doing this?

Sorry, but I'm not following. I have my main site open when I try to add the
buttons, then I save it as usual, but don't get the "save embedded files"
prompt neither when publishing the revisions nor when closing the web or page
in FP.

You don't save a web site, you save a page.

You shouldn't get the save embedded image dialog when the images have been imported into the web
prior to using them. You will never get the dialog when publishing, the only time it should appear
is when you save a page with images, were you inserted them on to your page from outside of your
current open web / site.

Before you start working on your web content, you must first open a web / site via File Menu | Open
Web / Site, then you create your pages, import any images, etc., then you start to put your pages
together, all within this current open web / site.

Yes sir, I know this. I just don't get the prompt when saving the page (I
thought I would have gotten it when publishing too, as it prompts you to save
your page first, but that was my mistake) but the Interactive Buttons just
won't load. When I look at the HTML code view for the page, it lists the
buttons as being on my C drive in a temp folder. I've also tried to manually
change this to reflect my base URL, but it still won't work. If I publish
anyway, when I visit the website online and right-click onto the X'd out
image, it also shows my C drive temp folder.
BTW, I remember that a few years ago when working with FP 2000 that it
wouldn't prompt for saving imported images either when saving or closing a
page unless I backed all the way out to My Computer and went all the way down
the path to my saved web. I've tried that this time, but it doesn't make a
difference.
Thank you so much for your time--I really need a fix for this frustrating
situation. Is there a way to manually save the buttons without the "save
image" prompt?

Try this...

Open the site via File Menu | Open Site
Create a new page and save it, then re-open it
Now add the Interactive Buttons
Save page.

O.K., that works just fine as long as it's a new page. Why won't it work
with my existing pages in my web? Did I inadvertantly change the web
behavior or something?

I have no idea why it doesn't work on your existing pages. If you post a URL someone else maybe able
to see why.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help. I guess I can do all new
pages and build around the buttons, as labor intensive and backward as it
might seem. Thanks again.

Change anything on the IB, you should get prompted to save the embedded images when you save the page in the currently open web
