Frontpage Extensions?

Jules Thomas

I'm a relative newbie and whilst I've used FrontPage 2000 before, I've just
upgraded to FrontPage 2003. I have a new domain hosting package which does
not have FrontPage extensions. Does this mean that none of the
wizards/forms on FrontPage 2003 will work on the Linux platform hosting?

Many thanks in anticipation of your advice.

Julie,
That is NOT QUITE what it means. If you had said "...will not work on
the Linux platform hosting without FrontPage Extensions", then I would
have agreed with you. FrontPage Extensions ARE the mechanism by which
Linux (and BSD and other OS's) are able to do the special FrontPage
things.

Many of the wizards are in your design work, so they aren't affected.
Forms, on the other hand, require the ability to either store the data
or for the server to process a mailing. They aren't going to work
without FrontPage Extensions. Also, if you don't have FPE, you won't
be able to "publish" your web without using FTP, either from within
FrontPage or via an external program. By the way, I use and recommend
FileZilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net) as a great FTP program.

Most ISPs, which must be where you are trying to host your site, don't
provide full FPE. Those that do, like Cox.net, typically don't allow
the FP Extensions to do anything that requires server-side processing.
They view it as a security issue, as well as potentially disruptive to
other clients.

I solved this, in my case, by going to a third-party web hosting
company. My effective cost, with their current specials, is less than
$5 per month. After hosting with them for a year, I renewed for 2
more (and got an additional 14 months for free). If you are
interested in more information, either email me or visit one of my
site -- you'll see affiliate links for them there.
