FrontPage Installation and Configuration

J

Jon Berry

I have to admit, I am compeltely new to using FrontPage with Windows. I
have been using FrontPage extensions with Apache for a couple of years now.
I have a windows 2000 server, and I have the FrontPage extensions installed
from the windows installation. I have selected a web, right clicked it and
installed and configured the extensions.

But, it doesn't appear to work. normally (under apache) all I needed to do
was add extenswions to a web site and I could connect remotely by add a
network place to the URL. This does not appear to be working because all I
get is an error about this not being a valid location.

How can I test the functionality of FP? Am I installing them correctly?

Thanks for any help!

The extensions on your machine and the extensions on the Apache server are like apples and oranges.
They are *not* the same. RTR software, www.rtr.com writes the UNIX versions of the extensions.

To make sure the extensions are "actually" installed on the server enter
www.sitename.com\_vti_inf.html and see if a page opens
with extensions info

FP server extensions are not compatible with Apache for Windows.

Well, that seems to work:

<!-- _vti_inf.html version 0.100>
<!--
This file contains important information used by the FrontPage client
(the FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor) to communicate with the
FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server.

The values below are automatically set by FrontPage at installation.
Normally, you do not need to modify these values, but in case
you do, the parameters are as follows:

'FPShtmlScriptUrl', 'FPAuthorScriptUrl', and 'FPAdminScriptUrl' specify
the relative urls for the scripts that FrontPage uses for remote
authoring. These values should not be changed.

'FPVersion' identifies the version of the FrontPage Server Extensions
installed, and should not be changed.
--><!-- FrontPage Configuration Information
FPVersion="4.0.2.7802"
FPShtmlScriptUrl="_vti_bin/shtml.dll/_vti_rpc"
FPAuthorScriptUrl="_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.dll"
FPAdminScriptUrl="_vti_bin/_vti_adm/admin.dll"
-->

So I should be able to connect with FrontPage then?

One thing was that when it was installing the extensions, it was asking
about a user or group that would have access. We only have an administrator
at this point, so that is what was selected. So, does that mean that I use
the administrators credentials for access?

Sorry for such junior league questions.

Yeah, the Apache servers I use are Linux. I am 99% Linux, 1% windows, but
now I am trying to learn this Windows stuff. :)

I would assume yes.

What are you using for a URL for your local host
Try opening your root web under IIS in FP using http://localhost/

| Well, that seems to work:

Well, that is the problem. When I try to connect via FrontPage, I get a
lengthy error telling me that there was a problem, and that many things
could be wrong, such as the server not supporting FP extensions, or that
they may not be installed for that site, etc.

That is the crux of my problem. I have installed them on the server, and
enabled them for this site, and the file mentioned above does exist and has
the information in it, but when I try to publish my site, it gives me that
error.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
