Frontpage won't open after installing Expression Web!

J

Jennifer

I'm struggling trying to find a solution to all my webs with FP extensions,
finally installed EW, tried to upload a FP web from EW via FTP, just to see
what it would really look like. Upload was sucessful but BOTH domains on
this 1&1 client account are now dead, nothing but an error message!

Immediate issue: I tried to go back to FP to re-publish this web but FP
won't even open! Now what???? Installing EW shouldn't dump my FP! I now
have NO web software to use and my client without a web isn't going to be
pleased either.

Does Microsoft have ANY real solution to this dilemna???? How can you dump
support on a product that's been one of the top web design software for years
and put so many people in this situation???

FrontPage does not need FrontPage extensions, except for those
components such as forms and hit counters.
FrontPage extensions ARE supported on Windows servers, and will be
supported (by Microsoft) on Windows 2003 for at least a further 5 years
(2 years full support, 3 years extended support)
Using FTP on an extended website will corrupt the extensions.
Expression Web does not affect FrontPage - I have FrontPage 2003 and
Expression Web running on my desktop, and I use both programs on the
same websites.

What error messages are you getting?

Wasn't 1&1 the host that suddenly dropped FPSE?

I get the standard MS message box ... "Frontpage application file has
encountered a problem and needs to close". I did send an error report. I've
tried a number of times again this morning, same thing.

Hi Jennifer,

It sounds like I am having exactly the same dilemma as you... and I totally
sympathise!

I've been building websites with FP for over five years now and using 1and1
as my hosting company. To my total shock I had an email saying that support
would be discontinued at the end of the month. I can't believe that 1and1
didn't give us more notice. In fact it seems totally incomprehensible that
they didn't!!!

Anyway, I'm trying to buy myself a little more time by swapping all of my
linux hosting packages over to windows hosting packages (still with 1and1).
Then I'm going to start looking at FP alternatives. I've downloaded a trial
version of Dreamweaver (which all looks a bit foreign to me!) and I'm now
downloading the trial version of Expression Web. Once I've had a good look
around both I'll take the plunge with one of them.

Dreamweaver seems to be the industry standard but I'm hoping Expression Web
will have a similar feel to FP.

I must say that I'm not looking forward to recreating ALL of my websites in
a new package!

You may find this link of use:
http://www.pdxtc.com/wpblog/web-design/front-page-extentions-are-at-end-of-life/
It explains things a little further.

Anyway, I hope things work out for you. You're welcome to contact me via my
website (www.smdwebsites.co.uk) if you ever need to discuss your/our
predicament. Everything was running SO smoothly using FP as well (

Gary

Download FP Cleaner from http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and
run the routines that delete the hidden Web cache files, and delete the
hidden temporary files.
Try opening FrontPage.
If this still fails, then reinstall or repair FrontPage:

Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
Scroll down to FrontPage and highlight, then click Change
Select Reinstall or Repair and click Next
Follow the prompts.

You may need the FrontPage CD.

From that link: "It is very likely that once these two new products
(Expression Web and SharePoint Designer 2007) are out, the Windows server
FrontPage extensions will also be discontinued,"

This is not true.

Extensions on Windows 2003 servers will be supported by Microsoft for the
life of Windows 2003 - full support is for 2 years after Server 2008 is
retailed, and 3 further years of extended support.

FP2002 extensions for Server 2008 are available - see:

For info. This is the reply I've just had from support at 1and1:

"Thank you for contacting us.

With regard to your concern, please be informed that our MS hosting
still supports Frontpage Extension however this we will depend on
Microsoft if they will totally discontinue supporting Frontpage then
there is a possibility that we will also discontinue our support to
frontpage on MS hosting."

Can someone hazzard a guess at when MS will discontinue support as it seems
as though 1and1 customers are safe unitl then... as long as we are on MS
hosting packages. This is somewhat of a refief and at least buys me a
little time.

FrontPage extensions on Windows 2003 will be supported by Microsoft
until 5 years after the release of Windows Server 2008. Two years of
this support will be "Full" support, the remainder will be "extended"
support - extended being critical security updates. As always, it is up
to the host whether THEY will support the extensions.

In addition, FrontPage extensions for IIS7 (as used in Windows Server
2008) are available for download now.

Gary, I'm sure there's LOTS of us in this dilemna and I reallly blame both
Microsoft and 1&1. MS should have given us (long-term FP users) a product
that would transition seamlessly from FP, maybe a conversion utility or
something. From what I see, Expression Web is going to be a long learning
curve. The reason many of us used FP is because we're NOT all programmers!

I've heard on other discussions that 1&1 does NOT do a good job with their
Microsoft servers ... apparently problems. Some have suggested to switch to
another host if you want to find a MS server for now. So be careful. But
even switching hosts, domain name transfers, etc. takes time ...

I'd like to hear what you and others think about Dreamweaver vs. EW.

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

Dreamweaver list for 399.00
Expression Web "upgrade" is under 99.00

Going from FP to EW will be an easier transition for you than FP to DW...imo
anyway.

Download both trials and decide for yourself.

In the meantime I would just go with 1&1 on a Windows server with FPSE (if
you twist their arm maybe they'll give you a deal) that way all you'd have
to do is Publish from your local to the new server and you'll be back up and
going in a few hours. In the meantime you'll have time to learn new
technologies whether it's EW or DW or Whatever.

btw...EW will work with FPSE without breaking them so you can switch back
and forth between EW & FP while you're making the transition.

Yes, an EW upgrade will certainly be cheaper. But no one has offered any
input on my original post ... when I installed the EW trial, it dumped my
Frontpage ... won't even open! Anyone have a reason?

Also, does anyone know if and how video clips can be put in web page with
EW?

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

Not sure what you mean by "dumped" your FP...EW is not an upgrade in the
usual sense it's a totally separate program and installing it would not
effect FP at all.

Are you saying FrontPage the program doesn't open on your machine, or are
you saying you cannot open your website with FP?

What happens? What errors do you get?

Did you try FPCleaner? http://95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

An update for what it's worth ... I managed to figure out how to upload the
web I experimented in via FTP, can't go to the root directory on 1&1. There
are 2 domains and I needed to set up 2 seperate FTP accounts to each
subdirectory.

BUT, no one has offered any reason or help as to WHY installing EW dumped my
Frontpage. Microsoft????

R

Ronx

I do not think anyone *can* answer that. I have never heard of that
situation, and there are lots of people out there with both EW and FP
installed.

As I said in my other post, run FP Cleaner to clear up any possibly
corrupted cache files, or repair the FrontPage installation.

MS has provided to upgrade paths, EW or SPD or you can continue to use FP. FP can be used to design
sites that do not use the FP SE.
