Frustration printing envelopes

Hi All,

I have some envelopes on which I'd like to print addresses, using
Publisher 2003. They're rather small (14.5cm wide by 9cm high [5.71
inches wide by 3.54 inches high]), and I'm trying to print them on a hp
deksjet 990cxi printer.

My frustration is that in Word 2003, when printing addresses on
envelopes, you can choose a feed orientation, similar to 'insert
lengthways', where you feed the envelope in to the printer so that the
'top' is the short side of the envelope. I can't find how to do this in
Publisher 2003. So far, it seems to insist that that the envelopes be
fed in normal orientation (ie the same way you would hold the envelope
if you were reading the address on it).

Unfortunately, my paper tray doesn't have guides that reach that far
down into the tray, so most attempts to print these envelopes in
Publisher end up with the address skewed across the surface, because in
placing the tray back into the printer the envelope will often be
shifted from the straight feed position it should be in.

Is there any way, using Publisher, to get it to print on envelopes fed
in the lengthways orientation? I've spent a lot of time (and ruined a
lot of envelopes) experimenting with options in the page setup, without
any luck so far.

Alternatively, is there any tip or trick anyone can suggest to get this
to work? I want to use Publisher because I need to include a logo on
the envelope, and the evenvelope utility in Word doesn't appear to
allow you to include anything other than a mailing and return address.

Any help with this will be immensely appreciated!

Much warmth,

Most HP printers that I have ever used have a custom paper setting. Setup your
printer for your envelope specifications using the custom selection in the printer
dialogue. Do not use the envelope setup since yours is not a standard size envelope.
This is what the manual says:
printing envelopes

If your software program includes an envelope printing feature, do not follow

these instructions. Follow the instructions provided by the software program.

1. Open the file you want to print.

2. Click File > Page Setup.

3. Select the following options:

.. Page Size: Appropriate envelope size

.. Scaling (%): Appropriate percentage (100 is the default)

.. Orientation: Portrait

4. Click OK.

5. Click File > Print.

The hp deskjet 9xx screen appears displaying the General option screen.

Click the arrows in the General field to select the following options.

6. Select Paper Type/Quality, then choose the following:

.. Paper Type: plain paper

.. Print Quality: Normal

7. Select Layout, then choose the following:

.. Pages Per Sheet: 1 (Normal)

.. Print Both Sides: Unchecked

8. Click OK to print.

.. Verify that the Out tray is in the down position.
