gains/losses formulas

I am trying to do a spreadsheet which will show gains from a total in
one column and losses from the same total in another column. Please
help.

please give more info, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do.

I will have a total in column C.
Column D and F will be labeled "gains" and "losses" respectively.
How do I make the "difference" from C1-C2 go into either the gain
column or the loss column?
