Gantt bar proceeded by dotted lines - how do i get rid?!?

I've got a pretty complex mpp and i'm just going through modifying one
guy's tasks. I've come across one task that has a 4 day task preceeded
by about 3 month's worth of dots. If i link this task to the previous
task, project sets the start date at the beginning of the dots and the
finish date 3 month's later after the gantt bar. Can anyone tell me
what's going on please - and how to remove these dots. They're even
there when the task isn't linked to anything!

Hello Pinkman,
Look at the Task Usage view. This task has probably a lot of zeros in the
Work row after its scheduled Start.

Hurrah! thanks Gerard - that's sorted it. How do these 0s get in there
in the first place? Is there no alternative other than doing as you
suggested above (just a bit 'long-hand' that's all)?
