Gantt Chart Display = Progress against plan

Hi..

I am in desperate need to help with some analysis. I am reviewing the Gantt
Chart and have noticed that I have rolled up summary tasks that show the
progress to be 1-2 months behind the "current" date. However, there are no
late tasks and the progress of the detailed tasks appear to be progress as
needed. I cannot figure out why the Gantt Chart is displaying the results
that it is. I have attached a summary task and detailed information in hopes
that someone can help me resolve or explain this issue. EDB is the higher
summary task with the Create PSD, PSD Approvals, PSD Submission, and
Conversion Program are summaries as well under EDB.

PERCENT SUMMARY TASK DURA WORK START FINISH
77% EDB 198 days 594.5 hrs 07/06/05 04/18/06
100% Create PSD 137 days 245 hrs 07/06/05 01/23/06
100% PSD Approvals 7 days 14 hrs 01/23/06 02/01/06
100% PSD Submission 12 days 80.5 hrs 02/02/06 02/17/06
10% Conversion Program 31 days 200 hrs 03/03/06 04/14/06

Ginger,

Please stop this bombing of posts!

The %Complete is a percent in Duration, which doesn't mean something when
some tasks are running in parallel or, at the opposite, are separated by a
large lag.
Display the Percent Work Completed instead : it's more interesting!

Thank you for your feedback although that is not what I am lookiing for.
Unfortunately Microsofts web site indicated that it did not post my question
therefore the multiple postings. It was not intentional!!!!!!!

Ginger,
Hopefully my expanded explanation in your "multi-post" helped clear
things up.

When I simulated your example, my summary progress line goes through
approximately 3/3/06, hardly 1-2 months away from the current date.
Nonetheless, Project calculates summary progress by a formula. The
actual positioning of the summary progress bar can be changed simply
designating the range of the bar in the Bar Styles definition window.
For example, if "complete through" is used in the "To" column for the
summary progress bar, the date at the end of the summary progress line
will be as indicated by the formula I posted earlier. However if
"summary progress" is used in the "To" column, the end date of the
summary progress line is calculated using a slightly different formula
(and to be honest I don't know what it is). However in neither case will
the summary progress line show progress up to the current date, so if
that is bothering you (or others) my suggestion is that you don't show
summary line progress because what it shows is obviously not intuitive
and only serves to confuse.

I'm guessing this still won't settle your mind. If its any consolation,
I never use progress lines at the summary level, all they do is generate
confusion.
