Gantt Chart format

Chris

Hi,
This is my first time using project and I have been following all the tips
and help lines but there is one I can't seem to fix. I have set my calendar
and I have set the working times and non-working times. I have saved my
calendar and am using the calendar I have saved. I enter my task under the
task name and the duration. The start date is displayed but the finish date
does not represent the number of days I have indicated. The Gantt chart does
not take into account my calendar working and non-working days so with
dedicating only 16 hours per week to this project the calendar shows me
working the standard times which I have changed.
Can you help me show the true times of the project on the gantt chart.

Chris,
It sounds like you don't quite have everything set up to use your custom
calendar and working times. If your custom calendar includes work days
that are longer or shorter than the default 8 hours, you will also need
to change the hours per day setting under Tools/Options/Calendar tab.

And just to make sure everything is properly covered, go to our MVP
website at, http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm, and take a look at FAQ
5 - Default Working Hours.

Chris,

You may also find that even though you have "aligned" the
Tools>Options>Calendar settings to be in line with your custom calendar that
there is a problem. Whilst your project can be scheduled to use your new
custom calendar the Gantt Chart view and other views will still use the
Standard Calendar to display working and non-working time. You may want to
modify these views and update them in the Global.mpt file so that they are
consistent in the future.

Doiminic,
A view is just a view, it doesn't affect how a project is scheduled.

Perhaps you are thinking about the Task Calendar field which can be set
separately for each task, but that is independent of the view.

John,

In my experience if you change the calendar being used to schedule the
project using the Project Information dialogue box the project will schedule
using the new calendar but there can be issues if the Tools> Options>
Calendar settings are not reflecting the same start and end time and working
hours per per day and per week as defined in the custom calendar, this gives
rise to anomalies in terms of durations.

There is also the "feature" whereby if you do change the calendar being used
to schedule the project the non-working time in the views still refers to
the default Standard calendar. Changing the calendar being used to schedule
the project does not automatically update how non-working time is displayed.

I think that one or both of these observations may have some bearing in
resolving the issue that has been encountered by Chris.
