Gaps in Word '97 documents

Donald

This is an old problem that I've never been able to get
around very successfully. In some longer documents, gaps
appear suddenly on some pages that I cannot close up.
Usually it's between paragraphs. I'll be writing on the
first line of a new para and suddenly I'm on the next
page with it, with a half empty page behind me. I then
create a block connecting the offending area/material and
I go to Format/paragraph and uncheck the widow/orphan
thing and check on the "close gap" one. It does no
good. I can sometimes close the lines temporarily, but
when I try to indent, or do something else, I'm sent to
the next page and the gap returns. I used the
symbol "thingy" to reveal the symbols (indents, etc.) and
I see nothing unusal in the blank area. It drives me
crazy. I know there are two '97 updates that I don't
think I have, but I don't want to do anything that might
change my word '97 for the worse. Other than this one
thing, I have no problem with it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Usually this means that the paragraph that jumped is formatted as "Keep with
next."

The other possibility is that you have the Vertical Page Alignment set to
Centre instead of Top - but Suzanne's diagnosis is the most likely.
