"general mail failure " error in Excel 2003

When trying to send an Excel attachment to a mail recipient using File/Send
to / Mail Recipient ( as attachment ) , I get the error " general mail
failure ) . i have searched the net and tried all of the following without
success :-
(1) detect and repair of Excel 2003
(2) uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003
(3) Fixmapi.exe
(4) rename mapi to mapiold and restart application
(5) rename Excel.xlb and restart Excel
(6) Disable addons in Outlook 2003

I am using Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003 SP3. Can anybody assist ?
