Generic Resources

R

Randy at Carhartt

Okay folks... I need some help on this one. This one is
strange - but true.

I have a project that is not suppose to contain any
generic resources. Yet they exist..... in droves! To
make matters worse, every time I save the project,
literally thousands of these nameless generic resources
are added. I can't delete them because Project cant
handle the load and if I try to delete a few at a time
and save - the "save" action adds a couple thousand back
on to the project. Short of a full moon, does anyone
have any idea what is corrupting this project?

ANY help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

What a mess! By chance, are you using Project 2000 with a shared resource
pool? If so, I saw your situation happen one time at a client site when
their database became corrupted and began churning out duplicate resources
by the thousands.

If you are not using Project 2000 with a shared resource pool, then please
be specific about the following:

1. What version of Microsoft Project and Project Server are you using?
2. Please describe what you are seeing as generic resources, including the
names of the resources.

Let us know and we'll try to help.

Hello Dale,

To answer your questions, We are using Project 2003 with
Server 2003 on XP. This is the first time we have ever
seen anything like this.

Looking at the "Build Team" screen, the generic resource
that was being added had the two-headed icon in the
Information column, the Team Resource column was
completely blank, and "committed" in the booking column.

Since I could not delete these resources while the
project was on-line (Project Server couldn't handle the
deletions), I saved the project off line and then deleted
the 38,000 resources. I then renamed the project and put
it back on the server (reattaching the sub-web to the
newly named project). Now everything seems fine.

In retrospect, any clue as to what happened?

Thanks!

I have never seen the behavior you describe, but I would be very concerned
that your original project had become corrupted. Without being able to
examine your system personally, I cannot be sure of this. Perhaps the
others will have some thoughts on this issue.

I have seen this in the implementation I am working on but I have to do some
additonal research. You are not seeing Generic Resources but local resources
with blank as their name..

As I remember, it was caused by the PM adding a new resource and leaving a
whole lot of blank lines between the new resource and the last one on the
list. Don't remember exactly how or which view they used to do this

Like I said, I will do some additional research and get back to you on this.

Adding a local resource to an enterprise project and leaving a whole lot of
blank lines between the last resource and the local resource would
definitely add a bunch of blank local resources to the project! It even
adds blank resources in a nonenterprise project as well. Thanks for the
additional thought. :)
