Get a data transfer error when doing mail merge in Word 2003?

When the fields are brought over from Excel they show up in the mail merge
incorrectly. The fileds are correct in Excel but come over as blank or zero
when they were populated with the (Ex. #4, or 1306B). Is there a fix for
this problem. I have ran all Office updates that were available.
