Get rid of default tabs

W2k.
Set up a style with a hanging indent which works exactly the way I want
it (first line of a multiline paragraph starts left of the rest of the
paragraph lines).
However, I put in a left tab with the idea that I could tab (once) to
that position but Word appears to have some default tabs that override
my tab. The result is that I require two tabs to get to my desired
position.
The defaults show up as a dull grey bars below the ruler. I've tried
clearing the tabs in my style - no dice.

Using the "Format->Tabs" dialog I see a "Default tab stops" value but it
doesn't have an option to kill the tabs, only to change their spacing.

What an I missing? I want to control the tab stops in my style.

There is a default tab stop at the hanging indent location. If you don't
want that, change the appropriate Compatibility option (Tools | Options |
Compatibility: "Don't add automatic tab stop for hanging indent").

Thanks Suzanne;
Turns out I was making life difficult for myself (in an intense learning
mode!), however, for future reference,
does having to change the "Compatibility Options" mean that this is a
difference between Wd'97 and 2k?
I'd forgotten to mention that the template was originally created in
Wd'97 and I ran into the problem on 2k, actually I didn't think to
mention it as I haven't ever run into a problem before.

As usual, thanks for your time.

Compatibility Options are a weak point of mine, but you can see what the
options for previous versions are by changing the options in a new Blank
Document (which generally will all be unchecked) from the current version
(which will be selected by default in a new document) to some previous
version and looking to see what gets checked. IOW, if you create a blank
document in Word 2003, the settings for "Microsoft Office Word 2003" will be
selected by default. If you just change one option, you'll get "Custom." But
if you change the setting to, say, Word 97 and look to see what's been
checked, this will point up the differences. Generally speaking, documents
created in previous versions will open with the compatibility set to that
version. It took me awhile to realize this: one of my old documents (which I
use as a quasi-template) was set for Word 2.0!
