As long as you authenticate with EarthLink, you can use any from address
you desire. But as long as you are connected to EarthLink you must use
their servers.
If the other server supports an authenticated server (usually on port
587) you can use it as well....

Earthlink doesn't allow access to any smtp servers other than their own
so you can send e-mail from
[email protected] through earthlink.
I can set up a VPN connection through my smtp gateway but that doesn't
seem fair to my clients.

IMAP is inbound, so it isn't relevant. What's the problem with the
users
using the Earthlink servers? Can't they authenticate to them?
