Geting around earthlink smtp access?

B

boe

I have several clients using earthlink for remote pop access. Has anyone
found a way short of setting up VPN access to let them send e-mails to other
SMTP servers?

Will IMAP work instead?

IMAP is inbound, so it isn't relevant. What's the problem with the users
using the Earthlink servers? Can't they authenticate to them?

Earthlink doesn't allow access to any smtp servers other than their own so
you can send e-mail from [email protected] through earthlink.

I can set up a VPN connection through my smtp gateway but that doesn't seem
fair to my clients.

YOu need to set your server to authenticate using the incoming server
credentials.

Sorry - but I have no idea of what settings you are referring to. Earthlink
won't pass port 25 traffic to alternate addresses.

Then talk to Earthlink.

Use smtpauth.earthlink.net (with full email address and password
authentication) for the SMTP outgoing mail server.

It is earthlink's policy - what I'm looking for is an alternate method of
using a different smtp gateway such as VPN but I was wondering if there was
a way of setting up a different port for SMTP that would work along with
port 25 so that the outlook client could communicate using one port while
the actual SMTP Gateway could communicate with other mail systems using the
standard port.

As long as you authenticate with EarthLink, you can use any from address you
desire. But as long as you are connected to EarthLink you must use their
servers.

If the other server supports an authenticated server (usually on port 587)
you can use it as well....

Excellent - thanks! That is the sort of helpful response I was hoping for.
By any chance can I discuss Exchange server settings with you so I can get
this ball rolling?

Thanks!

I don't want to waste anyones time but is there a URL with more details? Or
is it as simple as changing my smtp gateway to that address and I can use
any e-mail I want? - I won't have to worry about it being a non earthlink
domain?

The exchange newsgroups might be more help... but I'm guessing you are going
to say you are using exchange and it needs to forward the mail to the
EarthLink SMTP.... you'll set it up with a smart host. It's in the exchange
system manager's SMTP settings, advanced button on last tab. If you are
connecting to the internet via EarthLink lines I don't think you need to
authenticate, but it's been some time since I had to use it (EarthLink is my
backup).

If that's not the question you were planning to ask, we'll need more
details. :)

Thank you so much for your helpful responses! I'll play around with these
things in a few days and get back to you. I do appreciate your help.

Change your outgoing mail server to smtpauth.earthlink.net and you should be
able to use any account to send from EarthLink's server successfully.
