Getting a Strange Message from Excel

Marty

Hiyall:

I'm running Excel 2002 on XP Pro. I'm dealing with a
workbook wherein one of the worksheets will have about
3000 rows and around 50 columns. I'm trying to apply
validation (list of three possibilities from a list) and
conditional formatting (background color change depending
on which of the three possibilities is chosen) to 20 of
the 50 columns.

After I get about halfway through the formatting, when I
go to save the workbook, I get the following message box:

--------------------------------------------------
Excel could not save all the data and formatting you
recently added to {filename}.

- To return to your workbook without saving click Cancel.
- If you want to continue saving without repairing the
problem, click OK.
- For information about repairing the problem, click Help.

[three buttons: OK (default), Cancel, Help]
--------------------------------------------------

When I click help, the help screen comes up but it is
BLANK.

It acts almost as if there is a LIMIT on how much
validation and/or conditional formatting a worksheet can
tolerate.

Has anyone ever encountered this? Any ideas what handy
tips might be on that elusive help screen? Any REAL help
(not blank) will be appreciated.

Thanks,
MARTY

Good information. Thanks, Frank.

However, I think this is a different problem. I don't
believe I'm anywhere near 4000 different format
combinations, and I do not get the "Too many different
cell formats" error message.

Any other ideas? . . . . Anyone? . . . . Anyone?

Thanks,
MARTY

Hi
yes there's a limit for formatings. See:

Marty - you may have just reached the limits of your processor or memory.
Try saving more often to save little chunks. Sometimes I have to stop at an
intermediate spot and completely shut down Excel - I don't fully understand
all that this action does, but I assume it's clearing out some storage cache
somewhere. Also check to see if you have Track Changes turned on; that'll
eat resources, too.
