Getting an ERWin Model into Visio With Its metadata

R

Richard Weimar

Gentlepersons,

I have a vague recollection that about a year ago,
by some now forgotten process, that I was able to somehow
import or copy a data model from ERWin into Visio and, to
my surprise, all of the underlying metadata also was
copied into Visio.

Recently, an associate who has Visio but not ERWin
needed a data model. I have unsuccessfully been trying
to reproduce the process by which I believe I was able to
get a data model and metadata into Visio. Does anyone
out there in computerland know how to get a full blown
ERWin data model into Visio?!?! Any help would be
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Rcihard Weimar

Hi Richard,

Visio for Enterprise Architects, as shipped with Visual Studio Enterprise
Architect, can import ERWin ERX formatted files up to, I believe, ERWin
version 3.5.2 (Database | Import/Export | Import ERWin ERX file...).

It's been a while since I have worked with ERWin (thankfully <s>), but I
hear that somewhere around version 4.0 they dropped the ERX format in favor
of an XML format. Not sure about that, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thus, depending on which versions of Visio and ERWin you have, you should be
able to do this.

Hope that helps,
Scot.
