Getting error message: "Word cannot sort fields in the selection"

I am trying to sort paragraphs in a document ... each one starts with a
page number. I want to sort these paragraphs by the page numbers and I
cannot do so... I get the error message "Word cannot sort fields in the
selection"... any ideas?
