Getting project to adjust duration not cost

Reasonabley new to project and am bastarising a shedule for a mine. I want
to be able change resources and have the duration adjusted not the cost. Any
ideas how I can do this.
thanks

There are a couple of options. First, try Window/Split. The bottom pane
will show details of the task selected in the upper pane.

The task type can be changed to be fixed work, fixed duration, fixed units.
The latter two can also be "Effort Driven" or not be selecting a check box.

Adding resources to a fixed duration task adds work. Adding resources to an
effort driven, fixed work or fixed units task decreases duration.

So, you will need to adjust the task type and possibly the effort driven.
More information is available under help using the term "Effort Driven"

Actually Project will and should adjust both as you adjust the resources.
Since the cost is principally the labour costs, the cost of a task requiring
20 man-hours will have to be different from the cost of a task requiring 40
man-hours. And since work drives the duration, adjusting resources will
also adjust the duration. You seem to be saying you want to change the
resource assignments and while the duration changes in response, the cost
wouldn't. How could that possibly happen in the real world?

My resources are mining machines and the cost are metres advanced, I
don'tactually use money costs i just use the field cost so I can do a time
scale analysis. As there is a fixed distance the machines need to drive and
different machines have different rates I wish to be able to change machines
and see how long it takes to drive the distance (cost)

Hmmm - that's a toughy because the time it takes each machine to mine the
required distance would be the duration. If Machine A advances at 10 metres
per hour while Machine B advances at 20 metres per hour and the task
requires 100 metres to be mined, the task duration using A will be 10 hours
while using B will be 5 hours. You must be doing something 'creative' with
the duration to have to kludge the elapsed time into the cost field instead
of simply reading it directly in the duration field. Since the duration is
defined as the working time units between when work begins until it's
completed, isn't the time you're looking for already in the duration by
definition?
