getting rid of the white edge on cropped images

can any one suggest how i can get rid of the white egdes around cropped pics
in office 2007 i know how to do it in office 2003 but thts no good!

-format picture
click the little blue and yellow tool then use that to click on the colour i
want removed

I have 2007 and when I get picture tools>recolor I don't see set transparency
anywhere, nor do I get the full color pallate of choices I am used to - just
10 or so seclections. :-(
