Hi Steve,
No, the issue has not been corrected by Microsoft. In your case the
task pane is behaving as 'Microsoft intended'.
There are several issues with the task pane in Word (and Excel).
When it comes to displaying the task pane when Word starts, if add-ins
are present the task pane is suppressed. (Actually it displays but
when an add-in is loaded it triggers the display of the task pane
off.)
Some third-party add-in manufacturer's (Adobe is one) have
incorporated a Reg hack, called "DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane", as an
attempt to workaround the suppression of the task pane when Word
starts but of course there are issue with this as well:
1) It disregards the Tools/Options/View "Show startup task pane". So
even if this option is turned off the task pane will display.
2) The task pane doesn't disappear when creating a new document or
opening a document off the task pane. Some Word users prefer to keep
the task pane turned on, others want to see as little of it as
possible.
Maybe some day Microsoft will be able to accommodate all of these
issues (which of course could *easily* be integrated in the
applications) but until that day arrives the Task Pane Controller can
be used to resolve them.

Actually MS must have fixed this problem, because I did as Vamsi
suggested and it worked (I have all the latest "updates")...
The rediculous thing is that there is no OBVIOUS way to turn it off
(at startup) ON THE TASK BAR...
Furthermore, the help documentation does't seem to have anything in
it on this issue...
