The position of the character does seem to vary from font to
font. In Arial, the top of the circle and the top of an upper
case letter seem to be at much the same height. If you really
want it high, one way is to superscript it and then increase the
font size before typing ALT+0174 and then switch back but this
might cause problems with line spacing.
If you use the keyboard shortcuts for size etc., you could
record a macro using CTRL+SHIFT+> to increase font size,
CTRL+SHIFT+PLUS Sign to superscript, toggle the superscript and
use CTRL+SHIFT+< to go back. There are some other ways that you
might do it like autocorrect or replace. Look into ^c that can
be used to insert the contents of the clipboard.
It's a pity that Microsoft never adopted the shifting
capability of Word Perfect.
