Getting "unavailable locations" with advanced file search. Why?

Hi,

I'm preparing for the Word 2003 MOS Expert exam. Everytime I do an advanced
file search according to what my prep book tells me to do, I get an error
message saying "unavailable locations" instead of the correct file search
results. I can't even get advanced file search to locate Word documents on my
hard drive. Basic file search works fine. What's going on? I have a feeling
the exam will have a question about this procedure, and I would really like
to be able to pull off a successful search before I sit the actual exam.
Using Word 2003 SP3.

Thanks.

If you can pull of a successful advanced search using Search then you are
further ahead than most who attempt to use Search. It's had problems since
they changed it after Word 6. FWIW, Microsoft removed Search in Office 2007
because they found few users (if any) actually used it. Heh, maybe if it
wasn't broken folks would've actually used it more. <g>

Unfortunately this doesn't exactly answer you question but I suspect you
aren't doing anything wrong. Something to keep in mind is the exam creators
need to successfully perform the steps in the test question as well. That
might be why I've never seen a question regarding Search on a MOS exam and
I've taken all of them since they were introduced for Office 97. I'm not
saying you won't encounter such a question but I'm betting the chances are
slim.

I also think that Microsoft are pushing their Windows Search v4 which works
surprisingly well. I also find the basic Search in Vista works really well
too. They certainly made it easy to use: just press the Winkey and start
typing the keyword or filename. Of course the problem is that it isn't
restricted to file type without going into advanced options. But I find it
more successful to look for an email or document than any of the Office
search tools.
