where is the option that causes gif files to show up "inline" in a received
message instead of as attachments?

There's no option for this. If the sender embedded images in HTML messages,
they'll show up inline - if they're attachments, they won't - Outlook
doesn't do this. Outlook Express does. Different product.

Thanks for your reply, but I have the same version of Outlook
installed on two different machines. With the identical email
message, one machine shows gif files in the message; the other shows
them as attachments. Obviously, something is different. I need to
know what.

What version is it, and is the message in question an HTML message with
embedded graphics?
Are you using word as email editor on one, and not on the other?
Etc?

Outlook 2002 SP3

The message is HTML with embedded graphics.

I don't use Word as my email editor.
