gifs in word. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts

Word 2003 (Doc has to be readable in anything from word 2000 on).

I have:
8 gifs. Total size 185k
1 rtf doc without gifs. Total sze: 45k

When I insert the gifs into the rtf doc, suddenly the file size blows out to
3.5MB (and that is after doing the "compress" thing). Why? What can I do
about this? I have to distribute this doc in a zip file if that is relevant.
