Giving letters numeric values

Hi,

I'm trying to do a spreadsheet at work which list the
staff's names down the side and the skills they have
attained along the top. When a staff member gas attained
that skill I put QL(Qualified), C(Competent) etc in the
cell that corresponds.

My problems is that I want to total up the number of QL's
and C's that there are at the bottom. I want the numeric
value to be 1 for all the QL's and C's.

My boss is convinced that there is some way that I can do
this. Please help I really need to impress him so my
contract can be renewed.

=COUNTIF(B1:B100,"QL")+COUNTIF(B1B100="C")
