Global changes aren't saved...

I'll try again.

No matter what changes I make to normal.dot, they aren't
saved. I have been through the troubleshooters (Word
2002 Support Template, KBA319299, and KBA322743) and
tried loading normal.dot directly, but nothing works.

(If you aren't familiar with the Support Template. It
allows the user to delete, one at a time, the templates,
registry key entries, and three other possible sources of
a problem. Deleting the data key did not resolve the
problem, nor did the other four steps.)

For example, when I insert a drawing using Word Picture
(insert, object, Microsoft Word Picture) it loads with
the grid on. I click the grid off and then "default" and
it asks if I want to make the change global. I
click "yes." The next time I insert a picture, the grid
is still on.

If I change any options, the changes aren't saved.
Changing autosave to every five minutes (from the default
10) is still set at 10 when I reload Word. If I change
the "Recently used file list" to any number, when I load
Word, there are no files listed in the File menu.

It is as if each time I start Word, it starts from
scratch EXCEPT that it has save my formatting (margins,
default font, etc.) I have uninstalled and reinstalled
Word and Office XP Pro entirely (including deleting all
files not uninstalled) numerous times but the problem
remains.

ANY help in resolving this will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the Prompt to Save Normal.dot option checked and do you get
receive the prompt when exiting Word?

I believe that most, if not all, of the changes you mention are stored in
the registry rather than in normal.dot. You might want to look at the
article on dealing with a corrupt DATA key on the MVP FAQ site. <URL:
