Global Templates Mac 2008

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I copied some styles I made in a Word 2004 document into the normal (global template) through the organizer in Word 2008. They appear to work and everything is fine until I quit out of word and this message appears.

Word cannot save changes to the global template because it was opened with read only access. Do you want to save the changes in a template with a different name?
If I save yes it crashes.

I don't see where it has read access only. Where can I change this as I have to reimport styles each time I open word.

Hi Mary:

Is this a solo machine (belongs to you) or is it on a network?

If it is on a network, then none of what I am about to say applies: in that
case, you need to call your System Administrator and say to them "My Normal
template is locked read-only and that is causing Word to crash. It needs to
be read & write, and exclusive to my login." The System Administrator will
know what to do from there.

If the machine is not on a network, then it sounds as though Word 2004 and
Word 2008 are trying to open the SAME copy of the Normal Template.

I need you to shut down and re-start your computer. Leave the machine
switched off for 60 seconds, then re-start it. This triggers OS X to run
some Unix clean-up tasks.

Try the operation in Word again: a simple power-off may cure this problem.

If not: re-start the machine again. (So we can guarantee that NO copies of
Word are hidden anywhere in memory.)

This time, DO NOT start any part of Microsoft Office.

In Finder, navigate to the following folder:
/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates

Select the Normal.dotm template you will find in there, and go "Get Info".

Look at the two checkboxes at the top of the dialog: one is named
"Stationery Pad" and the other is named "Locked".

If either are checked, uncheck them. That will fix it.

Otherwise, look at the bottom of the dialog under "Sharing and Permissions".
You may have to drop down the disclosure triangle to see the list.

Beside your login name you should see "Read & Write".

If it says something else, Delete the file, and empty the trash.

That SHOULD fix the problem. Word will again create a fresh new Normal when
it next starts. If it does not, it could mean that it was Word 2004 whose
template was locked.

The Word 2004 template is in a different folder, and has a different name:
Unless you have moved it, it will be in:
/Users/username/Documents/Microsoft User Data

The file is named simply "Normal" (no extension). If you do a Get Info on
that, the settings should be the same: Not stationery, not locked, and read
& write to you.

If not, delete that one too, and empty the trash.

Again, that SHOULD fix the problem. Word will again create a fresh new
Normal when it next starts.

Now: If you go to those exact locations and you do NOT find the exact files
where I said they should be, please come back here without doing anything
else, and tell us. It's OK to use Word in the meantime.

In that case, we will need to talk you through how to find these files if
they are not in their default locations (they can be "anywhere" and we'll
have to tell you how to force Word to tell you where they are).

Cheers
