gradient transparent in graph (Excel XP)?

I have an area chart where they all start on the same axis. some of the data
series overlap and the ability to make them transparent would allow the
overlapping correllation to be seen. When I select the fill gradient however,
the transparency section is grayed out (unavailable). Why is this and how do
I get around it? I tried to download the latest service pack (3) but didn't
have my disks on hand so I cancelled. Now I cannot even open Excel because it
opens the installer (no way around this until I have my disks).

The transparency is only available in the Mac version of Excel. Maybe in a future
version (don't worry, you'll get new disks.)

The only way I know of accomplishing a transparency effect is to use an
AutoShape object and that capability is supported only for a limited
number of chart types (Area chart is not one of them).

As far as the installation problem goes, have you tried and let the
installer run its course? This happened to me recently -- on a plane,
no less -- and whatever it was that the installer wanted to do, it
finished without asking for the installation CD. Alternatively, if you
open the Windows Control Panel and then the Add/Remove Programs
function, is there an option to uninstall the partially installed SP?
