Gradients inside images do not show up in Word-to-PDF export

I created a letterhead image in Adobe Illustrator and saved this file as EMF.
I then open Word 2007, add the picture, and then save to PDF.

Now when I open the PDF file I just made, the parts of the image that are
gradients do not appear in the PDF file. If I go back to Illustrator, edit
and change the gradients to solid color, then go back to Word and export to
PDF again, the image shows up fine.

The image displays fine in Word 2007 and if I directly export the image from
Illustrator to PDF. So how come the gradients in my EMF image are not
showing up in the Word to PDF export?
