Grammar check dimmed out

Grammar check is 'dimmed out' for one document, and I can't get it to work.
I've attempting changing the language back to English (US) and UNchecking the
'do not spell check' - but when I go to TOOLS/OPTIONS/SPELL... the grammar
section is again dimmed. When I try to spell check I immediately get back
the message that text marked 'do not check' was skipped.

How can I find and 'unmark' text and/or how can I get the grammar section
activated (again) for this one document? [MSOffice 2003 under Windows XP]
