Graphic images?

S

Susan

I have created a few graphics using Adobe PE and they are
adequate for website I voluteer to maintain. But I look
at other websites and the graphics are much superior to
mine. I have that "homemade" look! One graphic I had
included text. Once inserted into FP website, the text
did not seem as sharp. Does certain software work better
with FP?

What does it take to make professional looking graphics?
Is this dependent on software or hardware--or both
coupled with skill and experience?

Thanks for feedback.

FP is only an issue if you use any of the FP tools to modify the image.

The remainder of your statements are correct, it involves all items indicated.

Thomas,

If this response was to my post then I'll have to disagree. I've seen cases where the images where selected outside of FP and placed
on the page. When the page is saved, the images are brought into FP and written into the web. Those images are of lesser quality.

I've never had, nor heard, of that happening if the image is imported into the web first.

Mike,

It was not in response to your post.

I was indicating where users use the FP image tools to modify the image, will adjust the image
quality, such as adding text to an image, etc.

www.easternshoreartcenter.com/exhibits.htm - at the top,
the writing Eastern Shore Art Center seems fuzzy also the
graphic logo lines are not crisp. I am encouraged that
Adobe PE is excellent becuase that would mean maybe I
could improve with experience. I played with graphics and
resized them. I would think that they would appear
sharper if created bigger and reduced, but in my playing
around, that did not seem so.

I am impressed with site www.neighborhoodfinance.org and
their graphics. They have some small but are still crisp
I noticed that it is not FP website but uses Visual Basic
and Visual Studio? Do either one of those pertain to
making graphics? Do people just scan in images at high
resolution and place on website? I have tried copying
graphics from the electronic publication(MS Publisher)
from the art center and using in website, but the images
did not seem crisp.

I think I need to take a class on graphics a community
college!

Thanks!
Susan

Photo Elements is excellent. You may not be doing something right ;-)
Post the URL and we can give you better advise.

basics:
-use jpg or jpeg for photos
-use gif for graphics
-don't manipulate jpgs too much (they lose quality everytime you save)
-text in a graphic depends on lots of things...font
style, anti-aliasing/not anti-aliasing...etc.
-always work big and with a non-lossy format, then save when your happy with it to jpg

lets have a look!

The HTML editor used to make the web site has no bearing on the quality of graphics, unless the
Editor has the ability to modify the graphics.

If may be to your or the organization advantage to hire a graphics artist to create the logo, and
then provide it to you in TIF file format, that you would then save as a JPG or GIF image, and then
import that in to your web and use.

I assume you mean that Visual Net and Visual Basic is
used for HTML only. Thanks - unfamiliar with it! So what
you are saying is that in some cases, to have
professional graphics you need to hire a pro. Based on
your experience, can you tell by looking at a website
whether a pro graphics artist was hired or not?

I would think yes that graphic artist was used to create the design of the site, but that individual
could also have been the web developer, as well.

IMO, skills needed to develop great graphics is not something that can normally be learned, it is
something that we are born with, and education/training just helps us to correctly use the available
concepts and tools to produce outstanding graphics.

Hi Susan,

I notice that when the image is enlarged a bit, the font looks smoother. In
my experience, you don't get good results by importing a font directly into
an image. You will get better results by laying out the font on a blank
white page in FP and getting it just the size and layout you want. Then do a
ctrl-PrtSc and import the image into your photo editor and work with it from
there. I know it sounds backwards, but my experience is that text imported
directly into a photo editor tends to come out raggedy-edged.

How about just typing the text directly within the image / graphic application?

It is my opinion that FrontPage should not be thought of or used as an
image editor. Even though the program has various options for inserting
images, it is best that you not use them. When you click on this first
thumbnail you'll see that you could choose to insert an image from a file
outside of FrontPage or from a scanner or digital camera. For best image
results, you don't want to do this! Here's the whole article:

When using graphics or photos in FP it is best to set up the size of the grapic prior to importing. I use the adobe publishing collection and have found that if I use Photoshop to size my image then save it for the web in a Jpeg format using a proper DPI, it will import to photoshop with better results. Remember to use the proper file format for different types of image usage GiF, TIff, Jpeg etc..

To get clear fonts, I usually layer them in with photoshop or Illustrator.

Good luck

Also, If you eliminate the blue border from your images it will help the look

So key here is that the image must be sized properly in
the graphics program before importing (this is same as
Insert Picture from file?) into FP page? Then is it not a
good idea to resize using FP?

Generally I use Adobe PE to work with my pictures and
save in format optimized for web. But sometimes I shrink
pictures in FP to fit page while eyeballing things. This
may be part of my problem.

Thanks,
Susan

Susan,

That is what I was indicated when I mentioned to not use any of the FP tools to modify the image.

Also Importing is not the same as insert from file. Use File Menu | Import or drag-n-drop the image
into your current open FP web, prior to inserting into your page, is the only way to be sure that FP
doesn't modify the image quality'

It still comes out a little raggedy. I only recently discovered that you get
better results by laying out the text first and then doing a ctrl-PrtScr.
Also, I might suggest that Susan try doing her graphics in some kind of
artwork software and then importing it into her image editor.
