Graphic on screen has smooth lines but image printed is jagged.

I'm working in Word 2003 and using an image with unwanted shading that I
edited using Format>Picture>Color> and changed it from automatic to black &
white. This got rid of the shading and was seen on the screen with smooth
lines. (It's a picture of an orca whale) When I print, the image is black
and white although has all those jagged lines around the edges. What I want
to print is what I see on my screen. Email me if you'd like to see the image
I'm trying to work with. Thank you!

Hi Carrie,

'Bitmap' Graphics (JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF) are composed on screen of rectangular pixels. To give the appearance of smooth lines grays
are interspersed along the edges of black pixels. When you change to black and white, rather than greyscale you may be removing the
pixels that remove the 'jagged' edges. Your screen uses fewer pixels per inch than many printers).

You may want to try using the grey scale setting and applying the Picture toolbar transprency tool to the shading area to see if you
get better results or use a graphics program for doing the editing.
