Graphics get distorted

If I insert a vector picture into Word97 (eg from Visio) as picture only
then I double click on it to see it in the Word Picture editor (I think
that's what it's called), even if I make no changes in this picture editor,
when I quit, the picture gets distorted - smooth curves are no longer
smooth. Why is this?

Double-clicking may be causing Word to perform some kind of conversion (just a
guess).

How about opening the picture editor first, then pasting the graphic into it?
