Graphics no longer visible

Hello

Recently, I lost the ability to view graphics in a document. If I go to
Insert - Picture - From file. I see an empty box on the page. Print preview
shows the correct image. I am sure that it is a setting that changed or that
I changed and don't remember. Could someone please tell me where this option
for viewing is located?

Sorry for the second post. I forgot to mention the system details.
This is Word 2003 running on XP
