Graphing of resources

Hi

I have a need to assess how many personnel I need on a daily basis for a project

We don't have the actual personnel as yet but we do have position names. The objective is to
1/ Determine the quantity of personnel needed
2/ Determine the type of personnel needed (ie, Programmer, Hardware Engineer, etc), an
3/ Graph this on a daily basis to forecast how many full time personnel we would need as opposed to part-time/contract personnel

This is also needed for management briefs

I was looking at ways to achieve this via some of the resource views and export it to Excel for the graphing - but have had no luck - as I'm new to Project does anyone have any direction(s) on this one?

Glenn,

What you are doing is core functionality of Project. The steps would be
to develop your plan (task names, durations, work, etc.) and assign
these generic resources to the tasks. (Project won't figure out what
type of resources are required ... that's your job when you make the
assignments to tasks). View the resource's work profile in the Resource
Graph (Menu: View/Resource Graph). You can change the timescale used to
display this information (daily, weekly, monthly) with the Format:
Timescale command.

You probably can find examples of this in the tutorial to Project
(available in Help). There are also a number of high-quality books
available, and the absolute best way (IMHO) to learn project is to go
take a 2 day course and take this activity with you to work out there in
the class.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Thanks for the guidance. However, it would seem that what I want to achieve is bit more complicated than my current skill set. The training will be looked at in due course. However, you may (or others) be able to assist further with the following additional info below

The depiction below may assist further

Dat
7/6/04 8/6/04 9/6/04............et
Resource Nam
Programmer Level 1 2 2
Programmer Level 2 1 0
Hardware Engineer Level 1 3 3

Total Resources 6 5

So, underneath each date column we have the quantity of people required. The intention is to quickly see, via a graph where the peaks and troughs are but to also drill down if necessary and get the detail

Regard
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Welcome to the Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Maybe the built in resource graphing facility could meet youre requirement.
If you activate it frequently, you could try recording a macro to make it
quicker. See FAQ Item: 38. Combined Resource Graph.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)
