Greyed out commands in Excel 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I am learning to live with the vagaries of 2008 but am totally confused by the greying of the 'Insert Column' command in the toolbar. I set up all required commands / menus etc. then find the command is greyed out!
The only way I can insert a column is to select 'Insert /Columns' in the menu.
I use the standard and formatting toolbars customised to my needs.
Any ideas?
EXCEL 2008 is V12.2.1
OSX is 10.6.1

Wrong "Insert Column" command :)

In Customise... Go to the Insert menu and choose "Insert Columns" (the
orange one). That will insert one or as many columns as you have selected.

The green one from "All commands" is "Insert column in a list". You must be
in a defined Excel List before that one will enable.

Cheers

Silly me... Assumed that colours were consistent and didn't read ALL the fine print.

Many thanks.

Yeah, well it's not exactly obvious! I only found it by accident when
investigating your problem. I went first to the Insert section and got the
orange one, which worked. Then I thought: "I wonder if he went in through
"All Commands" and if so, what did he find?"

I didn't even know about the green one ... {Sigh}

Cheers
