Grid Lines - won't show

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

New to Mac but not to Excel. I can't get grid lines on my sheets (on the screen; haven't tried to print). Yes, I know to go to page setup/sheet/show gridlines. It doesn't work. What could be wrong?

The Page Setup> Sheet checkbox determine whether the Gridlines print. For
viewing Gridlines on screen go to Excel> Preferences> View & check the Show
Gridlines box there.

Thanks for replying; I didn't know about using Excel Preferences. The gridlines box is already checked, tho.

Then in the same place check to make sure the Color is set to Automatic.

If that doesn't prove to be the issue either you'll need to provide
additional & more specific information:

Exact update level of Office/Excel & OS X,

What View(s) don't display the gridlines?

Is this a new workbook file or a preexisting file? If preexisting, what is
the source - PC, Mac, version, specifics?

Is it just the one sheet or all sheets in the workbook?

Is it all workbooks or just one in particular?

Have you checked for the availability of an updated printer driver?

Nothing is working. Here's the info you requested.
All excel files. All sheets. All views.
All existing files. No grid lines on new sheet.
Have been using a PC w/XP, 2000 Office Premium.
Now using Excel 12.1.3, last modified 12/7/2008. Just ran an Office update yesterday.
MacBook is 10.5.6, updates current.
I haven't check for printer update because I don't have a printer attached yet.

Well, I just checked for updates, and there are no current ones. Besides, I have had Apple users tell me they had grid lines in 2004 and 2008 so it doesn't seem like it would be an update. Any other suggestions?

Only 2 additional thoughts come to mind, the first of which is to trash the
Excel Preferences file [while no Office apps are running] then launch the
program & let it rebuild from scratch.

The second is more of a stretch, but check to make sure you have the most
current version of your printer driver.

If it's still a no-go try starting Excel in a new User Account to see if it
behaves differently.
