Groove 3.1 Presence

I am using Windows XP Pro Tablet edition. When I installed Groove on this
unit, I lost my ability to detect the presence of anyone else and no one can
see when I am logged on. I have the appropriate options checked to be
visible and to see others. Does anyone have a solution?

Hi Mitigation Elf -

My experience has been that showing presence depends on available bandwidth
and being able to get through the windows firewall. There could be other
factors, too.

Assuming you've got decent bandwidth and Groove isn't doing a lot of work
syncing spaces, I'd look at the the firewall issue. Is your firewall
configured to let Groove.exe talk to the outside world?

Bandwidth is not an issue. I am connected via cable. I only had this issue
when I moved from my Acer tablet to my Gateway tablet (neither company really
provides decent suport for their products).

The Gateway often tells me I do not have administrator rights and the
Windows Firewall settings have always been greyed out so I can not disable it
in defernce to my NetDefense Firewall. However, both firewalls indicate that
Groove.exe does have access to the outside world.

Let me work on these....

You are getting to about the upper level of my "techiness" here. I have a
friend who was once offered a position way back in the '80s with IBM to work
with their Microsoft Division. (He kicks himself today the he declined the
offer.)

He should be able to help me with this and I'll let you know.

Ok, now, here is the Kicker..............

I followed your link to the ctdotnet.org site and downloaded the Developer
V3 Workspace. <blam> the presence piece is working just fine in that
workspace. So, what that says to me is, there are issues elsewhere besides
my computer that are creating the presence problem.

I had an Acer Tablet loaded with my Groove account that was blown-out by a
storm that had no problem with presence. When I was reinvited to the
workspaces after downloading Groove to my Gateway, that is when the presence
problem began.

It now looks like any workgroup related to work has the presence issue....
where do I got to figure that one out??

Couple of ques:
Do you have admin rights on your machine..?

Can you run some network utilities that can check on your network and its
ports?
(e.g., NetworkView, TCPView, etc.)

I think your Groove client is OK but the network settings on your machine is
constraining you.

Drop me a line below, if you need more assistance

Thanks for the additional information and doing some experimenting.

So what were' seeing is a difference between older spaces and newer ones. I
have a suspicion you might have been suspended from all your older spaces
during the period between your Acer expiring and your Gateway coming onstream.

BTW - please note that I do not work for Microsoft. Like my friend SB, any
time I spend writing answers and trying to help out is purely voluntary.

Probably, you have a problem with the contact information that others have
for you being out of sync, but seen as more current. This can happen when you
restore an older copy of your account.
Try the first procedure in this article:

922168 You experience presence and delivery services issues when you use a
Groove account on multiple computers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;922168

Also, your previous computer may still be associated with your account,
which can affect presence and synchonization. Try this:

1. In Groove, click Preferences on the Options menu, and then click the
Account tab.
2. If your old computer is listed, select it, and then click Remove
Computer.

Note: The computer that you are doing this from will be listed in bold.

Let us know if this helps or not!
