Groove causes folder view to hang, or be very (VERY) slow

On one of my machines, Groove disables the folder view function.

Run Groove
Click on a folder icon in the Launchbar
Folder window takes very long to draw; sometimes never completes. The file
names/icons usually draw, but the chrome around the list doesn't
Once drawn, folder can't be moved by clicking and dragging in menu bar;
though it may just be that the draw is very slow (order 20-30 seconds between
dragging and motion of the window)
Cannot select file or directory names inside folder window - selection
doesn't paint
Cannot open any subdirectories, or files - or is very slow 20-30 seconds.

To correct: Exit Groove via File/Exit on the Launchbar.
Folder windows then revert to normal behavior.

I've checked by uninstalling/exiting that this behavior is not caused by
= IE7
= F-secure antivirus
= MS search tool

I also tried doing a remove and complete reinstall of Groove (including user
profile) - didn't help

System:
= XP SP2
= Groove 3.1a 2374

Hi,

Would you like to check what's the folder size of Groove folder sharing
workspace? Groove do not recommend user hold a workspace that more than 2GB,
because it's will casue some performance issue.

You can use windows explorer to open the fetch folder of this folder sharing
workspace, stop folder sync first, and then check the folder size.

Hope it will be helpful!

Hi,

First, I noticed that you are using Groove 3.1 and IE 7 on your computer.
Since Internet Explorer 7 is a new generation of Microsoft Internet Explorer
and
there are many functions have been updated or re-designed for IE7.
Meanwhile, please understand that Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is beta
version software and it has not been official published. So up to now, the
Groove
3.1 does not completely compatible with this version of IE. Therefore, I
would like to suggest that you can revert back to IE 6.

For the performance issue, please refer to the following KB articles:

How can I improve Groove performance in Windows XP?

How to avoid excessive processor usage by Groove Virtual Office
synchronization of File Sharing Workspaces

Hope this will do any help.

Thanks, Mason, this is very helpful.

The total share size does exceed 2GB. I'll reduce it and see if that helps.

The curious thing is that I have the same workspace shared to my laptop, and
everything runs fine over there. The only significant difference between the
two systems is that I'm running F-Secure on the problem machine, and Norton
Antivirus on the laptop. However, stopping F-Secure doesn't fix the problem;
and the problem predates my F-Secure install.

Thanks Sara, this is very helpful.

I take your point about IE7. However, I don't think it's the problem in
this case for two reasons:

1. I tried uninstalling IE7 and running IE6. The Groove problem persisted.

2. I'm running IE7 (RC1) on my laptop also, where I have the same Groove
workspace; I'm not having problems on the laptop.

I'll follow up on the links you sent.

Actually, Mason, a follow-up please: I didn't follow your instructions.
Where is the "fetch folder"?

And where/how do I stop folder sync? I can see the File / Folder
synchronization properties item on the menu bar in the Launchbar, but I don't
see a "stop sync" option

thanks!
Pierre
