Hi Thibault

What kind of documents are you working with? Some programs (the ones you're
using to look at the documents) /do/ actually modify the files.

Groove has a menu option "Open as read-only" on the pop-up menu for the
documents in the documents tool.

Hello Mark

Bonjour Thibault,

It is a know issue that occurs when you use Excel (XLS file) and Groove
together.
We encountered this behavior with a customer a long time ago:

When you open an XLS file stored in Groove, the "Modified Date" is
automatically updated at opening
This behavior occurs even if you do not modify the file.
If you do not modify the file, the "Modified Date" is updated again (to the
former date) when you close the file.
Do not ask me why this strange behavior occurs... I do not know

If the file is stored in a Groove workspace, Groove detects the first
modification done on the date and, as soon as Groove has the focus, ask you
if you would like to update the file in Groove . If you open the XLS file,
read it and close it without switching applications (I mean, ensuring that
Groove do not have the focus between the moment when you open and the moment
when you close the file), you will not encounter the behavior. (Because the
date is updated to the former date before providing Groove with the ability
to detect the date modification)

The only workaround we found was to install Excel Viewer and define this
application as the default application to open Excel files.
Thanks to Excel Viewer, behavior decrided above do not occur anymore. (I do
not know why it occurs with Excel and not with Excel Viewer). Note that
Excel Viewer has an "Edit" button that allows you to quickly switch to Excel
if you really would like to edit the file.

Also note that this behavior occurs only with XSL (Excel 97 and 2003).
If you use Excel 2007 and XSLS file, you should not encounter the problem...

And finally, you will also be able to avoid this behavior if you use Groove
Forms to replace Excel files.
Of course, it is not always possible.. but it's an interesting track if your
Excel files are used by several users and, on a conceptual point of view,
can be converted to a "form" implementation...

Hope that helps!
