Groove soft limits on # of members in workspace

I saw a post in the Groove Advisor blog
(http://blogs.technet.com/groove/archive/2007/03/28/speed-limits-are-in-effect.aspx) that said:

Here are some of the key “soft†limits*:
Maximum Total File Size in a Folder Sharing workspace: 2GB (can be overridden)
Maximum Total File and Folder count in a Folder Sharing Workspace: 5,000
(can be overridden)
Maximum Number of Members in a Workspace: 100 (can be overridden)

Personally I need to understand the 100 member limit -- I'm assuming that I
just keep adding users to override it but I need to understand the
implications of doing so with a workspace that has many small files that
change infrequently (most users read only/guest role). Can anyone point me
to some reference information on this?

We're using Groove in our business to distribut files to our clients and
will have to figure out a different solution if the 100 member limit will
really cause instability.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide on this issue!

Hi Laura,

Well I think you hit on the variables for instability. Groove was designed
for smaller short term collaborations with groups of 25 or under. That being
said, I know of companies who use Groove spaces and have well over 100
members. The key is they are using low impact tools such as calendar and
discussion. Now a Files tool can be low impact if the majority of the space
members are not allowed to edit the files or if the files are smaller more
binary types of files. For instance, if you have a 100 .txt files that are
shared, the impact to everyone’s system and the network will be fairly low.
100 video files, and you are going to have issues. Remember for your files,
each change that is made to the files need to be synchronized to all space
members. The larger the changes and the more frequent the changes and the
more members that need to receive the changes – then the more system
resources that are going to be used.

Hi,

Just to follow up, the “Soft limits†of number of files and space size
discussed in the blog do not exist. They are hard limits and cannot be
changed. Spaces can have more than 100 members if they were created prior to
Office Groove 2007. The blog is in error.

this is related to the maximum number of members so i post my question here
too, as well as posting it as a seperate question:

We are using a workspace to share txt files and pictures/videos. The
workspace is big but we keep it a safe distance under the 2GB limit. We have
around 40 users in the space, many of whom do not add files but only
synchronize once in a while.

Some of these users work in the same team and theoretically could be asked
to use one 'unit' account rather than a few individual ones. In this way they
would appear in the workspace as one member rather than a few.

my question therefore is - would it make any difference, in terms of system
resources, if we had five people using one account for their five different
computers (working both simultaneously and at different times), rather then
having each of the five use his own account?
It is certainly awkward sharing an account between different users, and all
of them still keep the workspace synchronized with their own machine. The
question is if we will be saving the workspace any load by doing this.

Thank you,
Uri
