Group By Subtotals

I am using task usage view and have a group by (say text1) field. It is
great, but the work assignments don't subtotal (or total) up to the group
field. IE -

Text 1 Task Jan Feb Mar
12345
Task A 2.5 2.5 2.5
Task B 2.0 2.0 2.0

23456
Task C 1.5 1.5 1.5
Task D .05 .05 .05

To clarify I would like to see......
Text 1 Task Jan Feb Mar
12345 4.5 4.5 4.5
Task A 2.5 2.5 2.5
Task B 2.0 2.0 2.0

23456 1.55 1.55 1.55
Task C 1.5 1.5 1.5
Task D .05 .05 .05

hrropj,
First of all, what version of Project are you using? And do you have the
latest update(s) installed?

Grouping as you show in your example will total up the task groups.
However, you use the term "work assignments" and those will not sum up
separately unless you check the option to group by assignment instead of
task.

Although it shouldn't make a difference in this case, but is your
Tools/Options/Calculation tab set for automatic?

I am using msp 2000 SR1. I have cal set to auto. I have a group by on text
1 for tasks and want the assingments to total in the task usage view. They
group, but just don't total.

Thanks!
Jim

Jim,
OK, but that's not what you showed in your example. The example shows
group totals for the tasks, not the assignments. Nonetheless, Project
2000 does not total the timescaled data when grouping (it only totals
the static data - left side of screen). On the other hand, Project 2003
does total timescaled values when grouping, (I don't know about Project
2002). Apparently that was a new feature added in the latest version of
Project. Project 2003 also added the option to either total the task or
assignment timescaled values when grouping.

There are a couple of choices. You can upgrade to Project 2003, or you
can export the timescaled data to Excel using the "analyze timescaled
data in Excel" add-in for Project 2000.

Hope this helps.

so how do I do that in 2003? I can see how I get the assignments to group,
but again the subtotal does not show up for the group....
Jim,
Wow, its been a while - I had to re-read the original thread to remember
what we were discussing. At any rate, I set up a simple file in Project
2003 with 4 simple tasks, A thru C. I used Text1 to designate tasks A
and B as "12" and tasks C and D as "34". I assigned a resource to give
some Work hours over a time period. Then I selected the Task Usage view
and grouped on Text1. The result (if the assignments are collapsed)
shows the structure you originally requested, including subtotals of
Work hours at the Text1 group levels.
