grouping tasks by internal/external resources

S

Sascha Peschke

Hi all,

problem:
we have many tasks where we had to assign more than one (human) resource to
it. these resources can be internal (employees) or external (consultants).

in the resource view I have assigned either internal or external to each
resource in the resource_group column.

now I want to create a view where I can see how much work is done by the
internal/external resources. (grouped by resource_group). because there are
mostly mixed teams working on each single task, the grouping this way does
not work for me.

I receive the following "groups":
internal
external
internal; external
external; internal

no way to say how much work of each task is done by all the internal or
external resoures. need this information to make a quote for a customer
----------------------------------

is there a solution for the problem? as far as i can see the problem is that
we have multiple resources per task...

HELP!!!

cheers,
Sascha

P.S.: its 5am, pls excuse my bad english

Hi Sascha,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You could use Flag fields to include the various divisions you want and then
filter on the appropriate Flag. You can quickly enter the data by filtering
on a group and using the Fill Down facility.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Hi Sascha, herewith a solution to your problem using the
information that you entered already instead of using
flags and having to do double entry. (You were on the
right track all along.)

If you have classified your resources using the group
fields, you can switch to the Resource Usage view, apply
the cost table and then group on the "Resource Group
field". Here's the catch: for MS Project to sum the costs,
you need to edit the built-in Group so that it groups
assignments, not resources. (It's a checkbox setting).

I tested it and it works pretty good! Good luck.
