I too had the "messaging interface has an unknown error" error. Only mine was
imediately after I ran my newly installed Nortons clean up. I assumed that
the Cleanup removed a file that I really needed. Needless to say, I called
Nortons and went round and round with some poor slob in Bangladore for over
an hour. We copuldn't figure it out. I eventually went out and purchased a
new Outlook 2003. After installation of the update, every thing was good. I
accidentally activated the cleanup on my server and imeediately got the same
error message. My new outlook wont install on Win 2000 so I was stuck again.
I tried the fixes mentioned in these posts and wallaaaH! It worked. Thanks to
all of you.

I never have had much of a problem with Norton's until now. I have since, had
conversations with other friends that have had issues with Norton's.
Primarily, the issues have been with Norton System Works Premier 2006. This
also tells me that Norton's doesnt care enough to offer a fix. Obviously, I
wasn't the first caller. In anycase, I am tired of all these American
companies outsourcing tech support jobs overseas. If sombody else tells me "
oh...I feel for your displeasure..." I might have to fly over there and look
them up. LOL
