GUI freezes and Office 2008 errors in console related?

I have a remote user experiencing system wide GUI lockups for a few minutes
at a time. He gets a spinning beach ball, can't switch apps, and even the
seconds in the system clock stop updating.

Browsing through the console log I found numerous of the following entries
during the times of the system freezes:

3/30/09 7:43:04 AM [0x0-0x34034].com.microsoft.Powerpoint[255] Mon Mar 30
07:43:04 user.local Microsoft PowerPoint[255] <Error>:
CGBitmapContextGetData: invalid context

3/28/09 6:12:25 AM [0x0-0x51051].com.microsoft.Excel[957] Sat Mar 28
06:12:25 user.local Microsoft Excel[957] <Error>: CGBitmapContextGetData:
invalid context

3/28/09 6:07:05 AM [0x0-0x45045].com.microsoft.Entourage[888] Sat Mar 28
06:07:05 user.local Microsoft Entourage[888] <Error>: CGGStackRestore: gstack
underflow.

3/30/09 7:41:04 AM Microsoft PowerPoint[255] CGBitmapContextGetData: invalid
context

saw this one in windowserver.log:

Mar 30 16:53:07 [61] kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were
forcibly disabled by application "Microsoft Entourage" for over 1 second.
Server has re-enabled them.

During my remote session with him I noticed that Disk Utility took about a
minute to start, waiting at the "gathering disk information" prompt. I've
never seen it take this long unless the disk was failing. SMART status is ok
and the system passed a Verify Disk test.

System specs are 10.5.6, Santa Rosa MBP, 2.4 ghz, 4GB ram, 250 gig HD with
127 gigs free.

any suggestions?
