Can text be entered in the left gutter margin and if so how is it done. Also
can the direction of the text be changed.

Yes. You can put the text in a textbox or frame, positioned anywhere. Or you
can set the left and right paragraph indents to negative values.

You can change the text direction of text in a textbox or table cell: select
the text, then select 'Text Direction' on the format menu.

Surprisingly, in recent versions of Word at least, you can also change the
text direction in a frame.
