Handwriting in office 2003

P

Philip Freeman

Greetings all!

I have recently purchased a tablet PC (HP TC 4200) running Windows XP
Tablet ed. I also have just purchased office 2003. It was my hope to use
handwriting recognition in Word. However, the help files' descriptions of
this do not correspond to the behaviours of my system.

I gather from a search of this discussion group that the behavior of pen
input has been significantly altered on the recent updates of Windows, so
that the information that office Help files supply no longer is correct.
Further, it is starting to appear that one can no longer do what I was hoping
to do - enter writing directly into Word and have it converted to text. I
guess I had envisioned something akin to Windows Journal's treatment.

Am I correct in understanding that this is no longer possible and the
"popup" input area is now the only way to enter writing as text in office and
other applications?

Thank you for helping me clarify this. I rather hope I am mistaken.

How are you trying to use handwriting? What is your interfact/program you
are attempting to use?

I believe that your understanding is incorrect. I have a Wacom tablet which
I use with my desktop system. From the language bar, if I click Handwriting,
three of the options are:

Writing Pad

Write Anywhere

Drawing Pad

If I choose Write Anywhere, then I can write with my pen directly into a
Word window, and what I write is converted into text. Never mind that my
handwriting is as illegible to Windows as it is to humans...

I believe this is the functionality you want... and it is what you get with
the latest versions of Office 2003 and Windows XP. You should get similar
(or better) functionality with your tablet PC.

I hope this helps!
