Is the handwriting input method available since Office XP been removed from

Thanks for any info.

It is there if your operating system supports it. That requires either
Windows XP TabletPC Edition or a Vista Edition with tablet support.

Patrick,

I think we are talking about different thing.

The input method I was talking about is provided for as an Office component
and will work in Windows XP (non-table edition). It is a component normally
not installed with Office.

Once installed, the WinXP keyboard selection dialog will have addition
fields that allow for the selection of handwriting method and voice input
method - assuming those are available for the particular language selected.

It is especially useful for input Chinese characters (requires appropriate
MUI component) using the mouse.

i think the input method you are refering to is the XP tablet edition input
method.

So you are saying that it is no longer available with Off2K7 for normal WinXP
because I had been using it since Office XP with the standard WinXP?

We are talking about the same thing. Voice input was completely removed
in Office 2007. This is now completely up to Windows. Handwriting input
is still there, but only if your Windows offers that support. And yes
handwriting is an Office component. It will show up in Office 2007 as an
Ink group on the Ribbon, but only if your OS offers inking support.

Sorry, but MS moved a lot of features to Windows with 2007.

That really stinks. Is this just a ploy to get us to buy Vista???
Why would people upgrade to 2007 office if office XP supports ink without a
tablet...too bad I already did...

I have an awesome Wacom tablet...just not Windows Tablet PC...this bites.

If I get Windows Tablet edition, does it see my Wacom tablet? Can I
basically use that instead of actually owning a tablet PC?

The problem is getting the Windows XP TabletPC Edition. It is only
available pre-installed on Tablet PCs and via MSDN/TechNet.
I don't know if it will see the Wacom tablet. I have never tried it.

Microsoft made the decision to remove the tablet input support from
Office 2007 probably in 2004 or 2004 (pure guess based on Microsoft's
release cycle for Office). At that point in time, Vista was probably
still on track and was supposed to have more features than it actually
ended up shipping with. The massive Vista delay that followed must have
caused the Office division a lot of pain. I'd assume that a lot of their
decisions were based upon Vista shipping quite a bit before Office. So
users would probably be further along in upgrading to Vista than they
are right now. With that assumption, I would argue that the decision
made sense back then. Unfortunately when Vista got delayed, it was
probably too late for the Office division to go back on major decisions
like this one. So now, we users are stuck with the annoying dependence
on Windows features that are mainly available in Vista for speech &
handwriting input.

In short: Blame Vista, not Office ;)

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

While I've not tested this yet, some folks have reported that if they do a custom installation of Office XP of Office 2003 and
choose only the 'alternative input' features that the handwriting/draw anywhere features will still work with Office 2007 after
using. If using Office XP you may also need the Office XP Tablet PC Pack from
http://microsoft.com/downloads/deta...48-269B-4838-AB9E-74B64626A494&displaylang=en

There are also a couple of 3rd party products that enable the inking capability in apps that don't have it.

I'd be interested to know if doing so ends up resulting in failing the
Microsoft Genuine Advantage test since I suspect installing Alternative
Input won't trigger activation, like the proofing tools. If so, then it
could make downloads from microsoft.com a little difficult.
