Handwriting recognition guide is gone

Andy Lin

I apologize previously for the help I was giving some
people. Let me explain...

When I went from OneNote to SP1 preview to SP1, I found an
option under View > Handwriting Recognition Guide. This
command is between no ink groups and show ink groups. It
shows the blue box where you're supposed to write but only
for the current line and doesn't show you the note
container drag bar (which is annoying and gets in the way
often). Only when you switch to the selection tool and not
the pen do the note containers show up, which is fine.

Now, I had to restore my Fujitsu and I directly installed
SP1 on top of OneNote. The "Handwriting Recognition Guide"
no longer appears under the View menu. But you can find it
under Tools > Customize > All Commands. However, you
can't, unlike other options, drag it onto any menu or
toolbar.

What happened to this wonderful, wonderful option???

I'm thinking of trying to uninstall everything and doing
my OneNote > SP1 Preview > SP1 install routine to see if
it comes back. That's how important this option is to me.

What are your settings in Tools/Options/Handwriting, Andy? I believe you
probably need to change to "Display the writing guide for the next line of
the paragraph well before I have written to the edge of the screen."

Nope. No matter which of the two I set, it doesn't show up
in the View menu nor can I try to add it manually. Thanks.

Okay, then go into Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and locate the
Microsoft OneNote entry. Click the button on the right for Change, and
you'll be offered the choice to repair/reinstall. Try doing that.

Well, it was worth a try, but no such luck. Neither a
reinstall or a repair worked. Any of the OneNote
developers have any ideas?

Yes, a Stylistic 4110. Does this option show up for anyone
else, by the way?

Shows for me, as I previously described in the Tools/Options/Handwriting
section with it enabled. But I'm not running your model Tablet. It does
work on three others as described, though.

Is OneNote device-dependent? Not that that makes much sense, because it's
worked before...

Certain aspects are only operational on a Tablet PC, yes, but otherwise, no.
That didn't help, huh? Have you tried uninstalling OneNote completely
and building it back up? Make sure to copy your personal files just for
safe-keeping, although they should not be touched.

When I went from OneNote to SP1 preview to SP1, I found an
option under View > Handwriting Recognition Guide. This
command is between no ink groups and show ink groups.

I've been watching this thread for a while and I didn't ever remember
seeing that option. So I finally checked and I don't have the option
either. I've got ON SP-1 Preview installed now. I haven't had the time to
do the full uninstall then reinstall to get the SP-1 RTM installed
properly. Anyway, all I've got at the bottom of my View menu is 'Rule
Lines', 'Page Header', & 'Show Ink Groups'. No Handwriting Recognition
Guide to be found.

Is this something that was added in the SP-1 RTM but not the preview?

I'm pretty sure this is a bug now. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I found
the menu item under Tools and tried to add it. It didn't show up on the
menu. Then, before I clicked anything else, I chose "Modify Selection" and
if I select reset Image, it briefly shows it on the top of the menu, but in
a weird fashion. Of course, it disappears the moment I exit the Customize
screen.

I'm sorry I didn't get to reply to this thread earlier - I'll try to clear
things up.

The Handwriting Recognition Guide menu item was a feature mainly targeting
east Asian languages as we display a different writing guide (boxed). These
boxes can be very useful even if the user don't want to see all the ink
groups in the page. I did not see any change in SP1 that can affect this
behavior, either in the preview or the final code.

However, it is possible to have it show on English TabletPCs given a few
steps. If you start OneNote, change your keyboard to an east Asian one (like
Japanese), then click the View menu (the first time after starting OneNote),
the menu entry should appear. It'll then appear every time from now on no
matter which keyboard layout you are using.

Note that you might need to install the east Asian language support in
Windows to be able to enable an east Asian keyboard layout. Hopefully you
already have it installed if you saw that menu item in the past.

Hope this help.

Note: Some might notice this creates a "ShowWritingGuideMenu" item in the
registry with a value of 1, under Handwriting. But I prefer to share the
workaround above which is safer than a workaround involving editing the
registry.

You naturally had to expect this question: Can you tell us the registry
keys to create and where to put them anyway? I don't really want to
install multiple language support, then Asian language support, change my
keyboard layout, then change it back just to add a menu item that would
be handy for all other languages as well.

If you won't could someone else post the registry key that gets created?

Sure.

Typical disclaimer... modifying your registry can render your system
unstable and unrecoverable. Do so at your own risk... if you want to try the
feature without modifying your registry, follow the steps in my previous
post.

Under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\OneNote\Options\Handwriting
Create a DWORD entry ShowWritingGuideMenu with a value of 1.

By the way, what this does is allow you to have the "active" writing guide
show up - which will be both the corner brackets and a darker background,
independently of having the ink groups showing. Then the only way to not
have the writing guide show up is to disable both the guide and the ink
groups. To get back to the normal SP1 behavior, you'll have to remove the
above registry entry and restart OneNote.

OK, so now I have THREE writing guide icons ! And I can't get rid o
them as the option not to include is greyed out in the Customis
toolbar menu !

Think these might have been where I tried (and failed) to drag and dro
the handwriting guide icon in the past
